Learn: The Correct Way to Set a Table

Learn: Setting the Perfect Table for Any Occasion

Wondering what items you will need to set the perfect table for your event? We have created this handy guide to help you get started.

Before we dish out all the goods… we just want to say that the table settings we show here aren’t an end all be all. There are many ways to set a “correct” table. It all depends on what country you’re in, what meal you are sharing, and how formal the event is.

The basics:

  • Forks go on the left, spoons and knives go on the right
  • Salad plates are placed on top of dinner plates
  • Napkins go to the right or on top of the plates
  • Bread and butter plates go top left
  • Glassware and coffee cups go top right

As long as you follow those basic conventions, there’s no reason you can’t play around with the items you use in your place settings to fit the courses you are planning to serve.
